No surface prep spray any substitute?

The advice you are getting about solvents for cleaning are directed toward pre paint cleaning, not in between coats.

DO NOT use a solvent such as lacquer thinner, mek, brake cleaner or other except to clean oily residue off the part before you start, and let it dry well before priming.

After your primer dries good you are going to be looking at wet sanding between coats to level the finish. That's where the prep spray you are talking about comes in. For my stuff I just blow the part off good with compressed air from an oilless compressor. If you don't have one then you'll need either some electronic parts blaster (air in a can) or an in between coats wash of some kind. But the solvents mentioned above will lift or melt your finish, so that's a NO NO. If you are diligent you can clean it up with a tack cloth. If you feel more comfortable with a wash cleaning I'd find an automotive paint store.

What ever you use for in between coats, wear a pair of clean gloves as mentioned to avoid leaving oil off your hands.

Fourth time turned out to be the charm. I went to one more auto parts store in town and finally found one lone can of prep spray. I hope its enough!

You can spray enamel over lacquer, but spraying lacquer over uncured enamel will cause lifting/wrinkling.

Hope this isn't a hijack - how about Eurethane paints? Is there a standard compatibility issue mixing lacquer or enamel and eurethane?

Urethane is a type of enamel....so it could go over lacquer. Best to do the whole job in urethane or the whole job in lacquer....at least that is what most paint manufacturers will tell you. House of Kolor is the only one that says it is OK to do it all colors in lacquer and then a Urethane final clear, but I don't think they sell lacquer any more.

not any brake cleaner will work only the zep cleaner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please clarify. Do you mean Zep brake cleaner will not harm fresh paint, or do you mean only zep is suitable for pre-paint cleaning?

yes the zep brake clean will not harm fresh paint as long as it is dry and i use it as a pre- paint cleaning. the barrel at work says it is brake parts wash.


If your wiping paint in between coats then you should be wet sanding to get proper adhesion.
