How to get gas cap off without key?

Can anyone give me a clue on how to do this? It is on a '81 Kz 650.

locksmith should be able to make a key with the number on the lock

Are you sure that cap actually has a real *keyed* lock? My bikes, though they are older, just have a key "slot" on the gas cap, that even my house key can open.

My cap on an 1981 model acts the same way...I could probably pop it with a couple stout toothpicks!:laugh:

To get a key cut from your local dealership you'll need 2 things....
On the bottom of the IGNITION switch , remove the entire switch, not just the cylinder, there's a code stamped on the bottom, this is the key code.
Take the entire switch and a copy of your registration or any proof of ownership down to the dealer and they will be able to cut you keys.

Now.... here's the secret....
Most dealerships do NOT use OEM key blanks, they use Curtis Industries blanks. The dealer pays about a dollar a piece for them. OEM key blanks cost the dealer about 7-15 bucks a piece.
Any money they charge on top of that is whatever they want to gouge you for actually cutting the key.
Most smaller shops will only charge you about 5 bucks a pop. Any more than that and tell them to go pound sand.

Any Kawasaki key will open any gas cap. I just tried it on both of mine. Heck, maybe any motorcyle key would.

Kawasaki did not employ keyed tumblers until 1983... unless you have broken a key off in the cap, ANY early model Kawasaki key will work. To verify this, I just walked out into my garage and opened the gascap to my KZ1000A1 with the key to my 1982 GPz1100. :lol:

The top of the Keyway will just spin and spin. You have to get about 3/8" in to turn the lower section. Like Mcdroid said, there are no tumblers, so almost anything will open it. You just have to get down to the lower portion and turn.

Well the key from my '78 didn't work so I'm guessing someone broke the lock before I got it. I ended up taking a small punch and driving out the little roll pin that held the hinge together. It came off fine.
