Tank Rust removal

this is how I used the electrolite method.... I went to a pool supply store, got some PH+ (99% sodium carbonate), I took the petcock off my tank and plugged the hole with a rubber cork, filled the tank with a solution of water and about 2 cups of PH+ (completly fill the tank) I took a spraybomb cap (the plastic cover)drilled a hole about 1/4 in in middle and put a long bolt with a bunch of washers on it(washers hanging about 2.5 inches from bottom of cap) intalled a nut to keep the bolt in the cap with enough sticking out to attach the positive clamp to, this is placed on the fuel fill hole so it dosen't touch the metal of the tank(just about the right size) then attached the negetive cable to the petcock threads, I used a 10 amp battery charger,when it is working there will be a bubbling in the solution, you should put the tank on a plastic bucket because there will be overflow and the solution is caustic, twice a day you will have to clean the rust off the bolt and washer assembly,this process took aproximatley 4 days,the tank was pretty rusted and now its rust free, the key is to keep the positive electrode clean, you can top off the tank with water so it remains full

use sodium carbonate this stuff is not baking soda(sodium bicarbonate)the system works and works for cleaning rust off other thing too if you build a tub for it, you have to have patience and pay attention to the project

I own a radiator & tank repair service center.We do motorcycle,car,truck,heavy equipment,etc...We do the electrial fling too!Most of the time we use acids tho.The tank department done eighteen hundred and nine tanks last year.I dout anyone in this fourm has any clue to the extent of our chemicial inventory.Four guys in tank department,three guys in radiator side.Weve had great results over the years.U have to get rid of the rust tho, thats for sure.I my self dont like leaving gasoline in my 900,gets old,have to drain anyway.So a sealed up tank wont rust, ever agin.Mine has been in the tank for sixteen years.My dad bought the bike new in late 75.We also have a Napa Auto Care Center too.
