The model year for the KZ400 will make a difference on the original color. There are no paint codes or formulas available that you can have paint mixed from. The original Kawasaki paint colors from the 1970's were candy colors which are a metallic base coat or a solid color base coat with a pearl /flake mid coat, and a translucent candy color top coat. There is a vintage Lubri-Tech color chart posted on the Kz Information pages of this website that lists color names and color coat steps for each model color. You can sometimes get a half way close color match by having an autobody paint supply store do a computer match from an original paint part that will give you a metallic type car color.

Hay Ralph, I am happy to see that you added the 76 colors to your list. I will be redoing mine soon, and will be needing some. I also want to restore my 77 KZ1000A. Will you be mixing the Red for that in the future?

I can do the 1977 colors too. I picked up a N.O.S. blue tank and a good red tail section to do the color matching from. The Blue is a solid red oxide base color, silver mid coat flake, candy blue topcoat. The Red is a solid pale red base color, silver mid coat flake, candy red topcoat.

I don't know their code. back when I was painting, we generically called that color Kawi uses "sour apple green". Later, Mopar made some cars that color and I remember it was called "gangreen" like the color your arm turns when it has blood poisoning.

The disease is actually spelled "gangrene" but you get the idea.

It's never been one of my favorite colors...

No such thing as a color code for early bikes, auto paint stores have a "color eye" a computer camera that will give you the closest color code to your bike. my way paint it to look stock, nobody out on the street will ever know it isn't, provided you do a nice job

Have a pinstriper guy just hand paint them. He will open his case he brings with him, then whip up a few enamels to get a match, as long as you have something to show him. I did the green 78 400 in background. I took a cover to my paint guy, he whipped some up. And believe it or not. The gold stripes are from a rattle can. Then I just cleared it with urethane. This was just a quick, did not care paint job.

Some of the pinstripe guys are truly amazing. Here's video of a guy painting who is able to completely ignore the other guy who is talking and pointing his finger near him and the fuel tank he is painting while he is painting it. Ed
