Frame rust removal

I remember years ago about a miracle spray that would convert rust to something more hard and stable, and if I remember correctly a primed surface. I think it turned black. My neighbor used it on his van in the 80's to some success. Do you know of what I'm speaking of?

i used it once it sprays on clear and turns black .its extend by loctite.

I painted a pair of Bronco radius arms in my garage (with a brush) with POR-15 over a year ago, and did not use a drop cloth so I got some drops on the floor. People have been walking on them, toolboxes have been rolling across them, cars and motorcyles have driven across them, and they are still there with no obvious signs of wear. I used a hammer and chisel to remove a couple of them, then gave up, they will probably be there until the concrete is busted up years in the future. That stuff is tough.
It does turn a little gray when exposed to sunlight though.
Oh yeah, I painted a rusty steel fence post with the paint remaining in the brush, no cleaning or anything, and the rust has not reappeared (but it is now kinda gray from being exposed to sunlight).

Por 15 is very good stuff, but it is UV sensitive. If it will be in sun light you have to topcoat it with another paint.

Do you have a compressor?

For what it would cost to put rust converter (poor fix, if you ask me) on it, you could go to Wal-mart and buy an $8 bag sandblaster and a $3 bag of playsand.

If not, just take it to a bodyshop that does some restoration work, and they can spot blast it for a few bucks. They probably charge you for 30 min of labor, so, figure $20. My local sandblaster and I have a pretty good relationship, and I bring him lots of junk to play with, so he cuts me a break. he'd probably blast the whole frame for $35, but shipping it to me, then paying return shipping is what will cost you.

The rust converter route isn't a sound solution. If you do decide to go that route, buy the good stuff. Get Ospho, or Rust-Mort. Both are Phosphoric acid based. Just don't get it in your eyes, or your coffee.
