Here's the chin piece I did in Duplicolor Metalcast Blue. First try at this ratle can stuff for me. I had some runs in spots and tried to sand them out, but I made more of a mess.
What are the tricks to sanding?
When I preped my fairing, I started with 00 steel wool (it might have been 0000) and noticed it didn't rough up the previous white paint, but cleaned up the scuff marks nicely. Can I use a super fine steel wool to "sand" painted pieces between coats, or as a finishing touch? It looked like it did a better job than when I tried to get rid of my runs on the Chin Scoop using a fine sandpaper.

How about primer? What type of primer do you guys use with duplicolor metalcast, and just regular duplicolor?

the problem using steel wool is if you use it on fresh paint after a bit you start to imbed small peices of metal in your paint and its not a very good abbrasive for painting. the pressure varies too much and you can come out with high/low spots

for the runs i would suggest 800grit wetsand and elbow grease.
you have a solid color so sanding it out wont be too bad. after you sand it smooth apply 2-3 more light coats.

for future reference you can do a "basic" paint job with 4 grades of sandpaper 220,400,800,1000grit
220 for surface prep,400 for smoothing,800 for wetsanding between coats/colors, and 1000 for final wetsand before polish.

For this Duplicolor Metalcast, I preped the surface (Sand,wash and clean), sprayed on an Adhesive Promoter as recomended on the Metalcast can, then sprayed on a basecoat of Duplicolor Basecoat (Silver), then the color of choice, in this case Blue.

I'm not sure what you mean. Someone recomended the Metalcast to me as it has a clear depth to it similar to the Candy Apple paint that's on my bike already.

When I sanded, I did get down to the Silver basecoat a bit. When I sprayed the Blue, I got a orange peel/cracked effect around the sanded/touched up area.

mykznme, do you use an emery type sandpaper, or a paper backed sandpaper?

I also have recently used the Metalcast, which is really a nice product from DupliColor. The base coat is a necessity because the finish with just a regular primer is not as good as you think it should look. So after two attempts and using the base coat the second time, it worked phenominally. Definately nice paint job though, I am impressed with the striping also.

i was thinking thats what the metalcast was.

the orange peel/cracking could be a few things.
orange peel is commonly caused by too light of coats and can be fixed by wetsanding with 800grit sandpaper
then reapplying another topcoat allow full cure and wetsand again with 800 then 1000 grit follow withrubbing compound then wax.
the more you polish with the compound the shinier it will be.

the cracking/"crazing" could be caused by one of three things. (got a pic?)

humidity,temperature

not shaking the can fully

and sometimes topcoat will craze if applied over a paint with a different composition like acrylic over laquer.

ive been painting for years and the cracking has happened to me a good bit so i did some research and now that i know what causes it i can manipulate it to acheive really cool effects.

i use 3m wet/dry paperbacked sandpaper.
i would say 75% of my garage is 3m:)

as far as primer goes the only thing you have to worry about is surface prep.
for chrome or any polished metal you need either an adhesion promoter or self etching primer.
if your basecoat is metallic the surface must be absolutely smooth or you will see every single scratch/pit. for this you need sandable/filler primer
and wetsand smooth with 800g paper.

looks great I have a spare tank I purchased for my kz 750 I have stripped it of the old paint. After looking at your tank I think I can acheive the same results with spray cans also. What kind of prep and primer and top coat paint didi you use?

So the MetalCast.....thats the stuff they have in "kit" form, correct?? 3 cans I think?? Am wondering about coverage, or how much of the body you can get shot per "kit"......Anyone have mileage numbers?
