This must be a fairly common problem so hopefully people will know what I should do. Both my side covers are cracking near one of the rubber pieces that holds them to the bike. I was thinking about just putting some JB Weld on the back to hold it together but I thought it would be nice to get something stiff to glue on to give it more strength. Any suggestions on what I could use for a backing?

gorilla glue and fiberglass cloth, use the glue like fiberglass resin
if you never used gorilla glue before try it on something first, it foams up as it sets, and it sags before it foams
two layers of cloth is almost a overkill

v out the crack on the inside with a dremel to give the glue a little penetration like a weld.ive used a hot glue gun to fill the emblem holes on sidecovers before;)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Been there done that. 2 part epoxy.clean the area v out the crack fill with epoxy let setup and its better than new.if you want you can sand the area when done and clean it up a little.this is the way i have repaired several covers that were cracking around the studs.

In the post from the link above, KZCSI uses alcohol to clean up the plastic, then heads right for the ABS cement. I thought the ABS pipe cement requires a special primer, yes/no? Doesn't matter?
