My first question!

What sort of luggage options are available for a 1982 KZ1100? Soft bags are easy to find .. but what about hard side cases? Anything that bolts on without having to weld, etc?

Christian:

A assume you have the 1100A2 model? If so, I think one of the factory options was as a dresser (full fairing and saddlebacks, tail luggage, etc.). It is unlikely that these are still available from Kawasaki, but because of the age of your bike, these items will appear on eBay...it just takes time and patience.

Yes, I have a 1982 KZ1100A2 touring model. Fairing, trunk, and saddlebags were made by Vetter and installed by Kawasaki. The Vetter equipment is not available retail anymore, but as Mcdroid said, if you wait long enough I'm sure they will appear on e-bay. The front fairing brackets are welded onto the frame but the saddlebag & trunk brackets are bolted on. If I remember right the saddlebag/trunk bracket assembly attaches with the rear footpeg and rear fender bolts.

I don't believe the Vetter fairing brackets were welded on the frame on any bike, at least according to Craig Vetter, they all clamp on the frame (usually with hose clamps), maybe your fairing brackets were welded on by a previous owner.
It's usually not difficult to adapt luggage mounts from one bike to another (within KZ range anyway, I haven't done any others).

Have you checked out Craig Vetter's website ? There is quite a bit about the Vetter stuff there.

I have a Vetter fairing from an 81 1300 with the brackets. I could post some pics if you're interested. I do not have the trunk or bags.

Great! Thanks for the info. I guess I'll just keep my eyes on Ebay for the time being.

I have a set of fairly nice looking hard bags (don't know model/maker, etc) I bought on eBay. Just keep searching for "hard bags" or "hardbags" or "hard saddlebags". There were many makers of hard bags back in the old days. Most have a three point mount system that is VERY universal in nature and will work with any bike with rear dual shocks.
