To clear coat or not to clear coat... was created by 650 in Vegas
I have a 79 KZ650C that I bought off craigslist for $200 last summer. It is my first bike and I am quite proud of myself for getting her up and running as easilly as I did (Ok, I admit it, I lucked out). After taking care of the mechanical needs I am finally starting on the cosmetic. I have already painted it with a two tone snakeskin effect (yes, I used the old fishnet trick) and I liked the matte finish that I ended up with. The problem now is whether or not I should clear-coat it. I used the Duplicolor acrylic enamel that comes in the rattle-can with a glossy undercoat and a matte topcoat that realy makes the masked-off details pop. I dont want to get rid of the matte finish, but everyone is telling me I should use the Duplicolor clear coat. How well will that paint hold-up without the clear-coat, and if a clear-coat is needed, is there such thing as a matte clear? I'd appreciate any advice anyone has.

I tried to add this the first time but it did not go through.

I started with a badly chipped red and here is what it looks like now...

I can't seem to figure out how to upload more than one picture per post... any advice?

Looks cool. Yes you can get a mat clear to keep the finish you want. Check out a automotive paint store.
