Awesome info, thanks! Now I have somewhere to start anyways. The tank does look pretty small, does anyone make an aftermarket tank for a bit more range?

Although I'm not real sure about the 80 Ltd-4, the later Ltds have the same frame as the 650-CSRs. These bikes share a number of parts.

If I was going to look into a Standard-type seat & painted fenders, I would try the 750E. This bike is kinda similar to the Ltd models - the E has the same side covers & I believe it's exhaust system will bolt onto the Ltds (but the E mufflers are ~6" longer). It has painted fenders. Also, the E fuel tank is bigger than the Ltd & is a direct bolt-on to the Ltd-4s - unfortunately, it will interfere w the Ltd steering stem (when you turn the handlebars, the upper triple bolts hit the tank). JMK.
