Sand them real good with 80 grit using a DA sander then use an etching primer then use a filling primer, sand smooth and paint them.

I have sanded them with good results and I have also sandblasted the chrome and then primered, sanded and painted and they turned out good that way also.

Be advised if you do choose to paint chrome, it will be just like any repaint, it won't last, will peal and otherwise look crappy whithin a short time. If you do all the right prep though, you might get a year or two out of it. Why in the world would anyone want to put paint over chrome which is about the most hard durable coating there is, where conversely repaint is the least durable??? Doesn't make logical sense.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Because the chrome is pitted with rust and chipping off in various spots, which is common on bikes that have sat unused (especially if left outside) for some time and/or improperly stored.

I'd strip/blast all of the chrome off and start from scratch with a clean, rust-free and properly prepped surface. The end result after painting will look a LOT smoother and be more durable. ;)

Then again, you might be ahead of the game if you can find the same parts before they were chromed...or are these parts that were chromed from the factory? What parts are you talking about painting?
