Flash Rush in tank. Help

I used the 'Rusty Tanks' thread today to clean out my old tank. Goodness, that worked SO well, the tank looks brand new inside! All for 20 bucks. I am happy.

Anyways, I do have one slight problem. In the article it says wash it out thoroughly, and then attach a dryer to it and dry all the water out. Well, I can't get it dry before it freakin' flash rusts all over. I did put in the Naval Jelly, but as soon as I wash that out with water, it rusts almost instantly. Before I can get it dry, it is already rusted. Is there something I can do. I will put in another batch of Muriatic Acid and clean out the present surface rust, but when I wash that out and go to dry, I............?

sounds bad but it works.

drain tank.
fill with simple green.
then boiling water.
let set overnight.
drain tank and try to dry as best as you can.
put in two cups of vegetable oil and swish around, covering the whole inside. then drain it again.
when you re-install it the oil will be so minute that it should not effect it.

( fill to the top with gas first of course)

always worked for me.

I have always used wd40 to keep rust off my goodies...

but i dont know if you could get it onto the metal before it rusted. I think that a little light flash rust will not really hurt much when you throw the tank on the bike.

Just change the fule filter after a tank or two of gas.

If phosphoric acid is used instead of muriatic acid you won't get the flash rust. Phosphoric acid leaves behind a coating that prevents flash rusting.

You could always skip the hair drying part and rinse with water, then maybe dri-gas treatment to absorb the water, and a rinse with some light oil. that would probably keep it from rusting.

go behind with methyle ethyl ketone (MEK)...takes all the moisture out. thats what i did and it worked great.

Well I cleaned it out with the Muratiac Acid, then flushed it out. As soon as i get that flushed out, I pour in the Naval Jelly which IS a phosforic acid. But as soon as I wash out the Naval Jelly and put the dryer up to it, it rusts. I was thinking of flushing the Acid out and then pouring a full tank of gas in, then draining it...


BTW, using the vegatable oil...what would that do? I thought oil and water don't mix..

Never had that problem. I use muriatic followed by phosphoric acid and then force the tank dry with a hair dryer set on low heat. Never had any flash rust in ten or more tanks.

Yup yup. I used that exactly. It worked perfect.

But after I flush out the Naval Jelly THOROUGHLY, it rusts a bit before I can get it dry.

Just a theory , but consider --

WD40 (WD stands for Water Displacement) is available in liquid form. Have seen it in gallon size, but unsure about smaller size.

Immediately after water rinse, pour in some WD40 and shake-slosh it all around inside the tank. It should displace and help remove the water. And any spillage won't harm the paint. Should also leave minimal protective coating until filled with gasoline.

Suppose you could rinse-flush first with common rubbing alcohol (a bottle full) to remove most of the water residue before the WD40 treatment.

So the sequence would be: muratic > phosphoric > water > alcohol > WD40 > gasoline > rust-free happiness.

I think Patton is onto it. WD-40 (as noted) stands for "Water Displacment times fourty", meaning one part of WD will displace 40 parts of water. And we all know WD is flamable, so I doubt if a light WD residue in the tank would alter your fuel burn.
