I have not tried to paint any aluminum engine components lately but when painting aluminum I always use a system that etches the metal(mild acid) and then use an etch primer made for aluminum. Not sure how the etch primer will hold up to heat but it helps with adhesion which is a problem with aluminum.Etch primer is available in spray cans.

I may be a little late coming in here but,,, with experience paiting show quality vehicles of various natures, I have found that using a Zinc Chromate based primer is the best thing you can do to insure a long lasting paint job on an engine. This acts as an insulator to you top coat.

So turpehar is there a brand of primer that you would suggest that contains zinc chromate? Also is the primer you are using rated for the high heat? I am getting the old paint striped off my engine today and prepping for paint. Sorry to jump in just to ask questions.
