Will a KZ650 tail section fit on an SR? was created by Heresies K. Intruder
I just recently bought a '79 KZ650D2 (SR model.) From what I've read, the frames between the standard KZ650 and SR are the same:

The SR's engine rests in a mild steel, double-downtube frame identical to the regular KZ650 structure. The SR frame, however, has an additional half-degree of steering head angle and five more millimeters of front wheel trail. These increases are not due to a change in the frame or front-end parts. Instead they are merely a result of the SR's 16-inch rear tire.

This was taken from:

motorbikearchives.com/bike-tests/sportbi...ki-kz650sr-1979.html

So, this being the case, is there any reason why I could not put a standard KZ650 seat, tail section, and tank on my KZ650 SR?

im not really experianced with 650 stuff but according to that article its the same frame.you might have to fab a couple mounting tabs for the tailpiece since your model didnt have one;)

I got a 650 tailpiece on my kz1000. L'il bit of imagination for mounts and it was easy. If there's ONE thing that we all know around here, its that you can get (almost) anything modified, cut, drilled, spacer-ed adapted, and fit onto something else.

Welcome HKI.

The back loop of the frame is a little different between the D models and B&C models, as well as missing the tail section mounting tabs. But as others have shown, anythings possable.

Here's a 650 SR in the gallery with a tail: 650SR .

I have always wondered the same thing. My first KZ was an SR and I always wanted a tail like my older brother's 1000. I have a chance to buy back my original bike after 20 years and I'd still like to get a tail on there!

Cool. Thanks for the replies. I'm going to start looking for the tail, seat, and tank on Ebay once I get my bike to what I consider road-worthy and solid. Then I can start with the fun stuff. I'll definitely have to post a write-up or something if I manage to pull it off and make it look good. I can't imagine it would be that hard, even if it's not a direct bolt-on swap. My main concern is if the KZ650 tank will fit.

Then again, maybe the tail with the SR tank would look alright...

HKI,
I just saw this post. I am interested in doing the same thing with the same bike. I have been seeking a more comfortable seat replacement for my 79 650SR but they are hard to find because the SR was limited production and the seat/fender configuration is different. However, parts for the 650KZ are more plentiful, including seats and rear spoilers. So I was wondering....
Anybody here ever install a rear spoiler on an SR model? If so, will a standard KZ650 seat work on the SR frame? I know that the SR seat will NOT work if a spoiler is installed, so another seat has to be used. Except for the shape of the pan of the KZ Vs SR, are the hinge, latch and grommet placements compatible?
I welcome all comments.

Try asking kz_canis, as that is what he's done on this SR here.

Thanks Rob, but I don't think that bike is an SR model...or at least its' been extensively modified (note single disc front brake, among other differences). I checked out the photos in detail, but not enough info one way or another.
I am searching the other forums and ebay pics showing the bare frame of KZ models.
My main concern is that the hinge points and latch match up. Mounting the rear cowl should be fairly simple, even with modification.
The rear cowl installation isn't my goal. I just want to find a comfortable seat for my wife and me. The SR models are just too rare and 18 months of searching for a seat have proved fruitless. However, there's LOTS of KZ seats available. So I figured I'd add the cowl and use a KZ seat...IF possible.
BTW...I like your KZ site.
Peace,
Dave and Jan

It's been about 20 years now, but the only place I could find an SR seat kit was through Mustang. I think they are still in business but don't list the SR anymore. You could try contacting them to see if they have any left over. I bought an LTD style kit and really liked it. It was a direct replacement cover using the stock pan.

The 650info site is not mine, if that's what your refering to.
Mike, aka Tazzman started that site, and I'm just looking after it with some help while he's away.
It is a great site for those looking for info on the 650s.
