KZ440 belt to chain drive was created by Grcko
I am swapping out my belt drive to a chain. I have the chain drive swing arm. I found out the swing arm is narrower than the belt one and the belt axle is to long. I was wondering if there is a different axel for the chain drive models. Any ideas would help as this is a daily rider and runs like a dream. Thanks.

If you cant find the correct axle then a last resort may be to find the right die and just extend the existing threaded section and cut off the excess.

or bring the bolt/axle to a machine shop and tell them what you want.

That is what I was thinking might be the easiest way to go.

There are a few on ebay at the moment. Unsure how to distinguish belt from chain type. At least one of those on offer includes a measurement

Or use a spacer on the axle to make up the difference.  ( 1 on each end might look better)

You couldn’t just swap out the pulleys and belt for the sprockets and chain, using the existing swingarm and such? That is what I did when I converted my belt drive 750.

Yeah, I swapped an 81 kz440 D2 LTD Belt with just sprokets and a chain. You'll have to cut off a belt guard mount but it has been fine.

The chain hits the belt guard mounts on the belt swing arm. The chain swing arm has different  mounts for the guard and uses a different guard.

Seems like cutting off one chain guard mount would be less hassle than making wheel spacers and such.

Well, I went with the spacer option. Doesn’t look too bad. I put the chain I had on and set it all to specs. I started it up and ran it for a few minutes and all seemed good.
Now for a newbie question. When a chain  says it is 106 links; is that actual links or pin count?  I do want to get a new chain as the old one is a bit rough.

Chain and sprockets really should be replaced as a set, unless the existing items are close to new.

They wear in together and (for example) putting a new chain on worn sprockets will prematurely wear the chain.

Finally got all the parts on Thursday and put it all together. I rode it 20 miles to work and 20 miles home  and it all works well. It does run 500 rpm more than it did before at 70mph due to front sprocket being smaller compared to the belt pulley.
I am very pleased with the results.
Thanks for the help with this.
