1980 KZ 440 engine sprocket

I am trying to replace the engine sprocket on my 1980 KZ 440 A1.  I am not sure of the thread direction since the nut on the shaft will not budge.  I am assuming that it has right hand threads.  I sprayed it with WD 40 and let it sit overnight.  I used an impact driver but still no budge and I am afraid to break it.  Any suggestions would be appreciated !  Thanks!

When you say Impact driver, do you mean the type impact wrench used for removing car lug nuts? I'm suprised that wouldn't do it.
You could try tightening it to break it loose. Or heat it with a tourch. If you have to split it to get it off, new nuts are avalible.

Yes. air powered impact wrench.  Maybe use a big nut splitter ?

If you use heat be prepared to replace the seal behind it once off if necessary - rubber doesn't like heat
Might seem like a stupid question but I assume you have released the locking washer ?

I recommend using a proper penetrant like Kroil or PB Blaster. WD-40 isn't going to get the job done (if that is indeed the issue).

I thought there would be a locking washer (the kind with the bend-up edge) but Partzilla says there isn't one - unless the spline washer is meant for that. The diagram shows a strange cutout in the side of the spline washer, so maybe that's it.

Yes. there appears to be a bent flap on the washer behind the nut.  I did bend it down.  I will try a better penetrant fluid and let it sit overnight.  I will try again to break it loose with the air wrench.

Definitely - the washer can interfere even if it appears to be out of the way. Recommend using a drift punch to ensure the washer is 100% clear, especially where it contacts the nut. Simply using a chisel or similar to bend the tab back down will likely leave a small bump that will hold the nut in place.

Hurrah !  I got the nut to come off today.  2 days of soaking with JB 80 and a friends Dewalt 20v impact wrench.   Actually, it came off pretty quick with the Dewalt.  For future reference it has right hand threads.  A BIG THANK YOU to All for the advice and encouragement!  Cheers !
