I've pulled the two upper bolts out but I can't retract the piston enough to get it to clear the frame it sits on and pushes the outer pad through. I cant figure out how to remove the inner pad either to try and make some room. Any thoughts? I'm really rather stuck and the outer pad has got to be shot because I'm getting wicked pulsing and scraping from there

Always remember to keep the rubber side down!

I think you 650 is the same as my 1000 rear caliper and bracket in design.

The outer pad is held in position by the bracket it’s completely round. The rotation of the pad is stopped by a metal clip that acts like a keyway. The inner pad is held in the caliper with a cross head screw and disc. You can remove the cross head bolt with a JIS screwdriver, then the disc. It will allow you to get a c-clamp on the inner pad and on the outside if the caliper and compression the piston. You can also try wood or plastic cabinet shims between the inner side of the rotor (disc) and the inner pad. Once the outer pad hit the rotor the shims should start to compress the piston. It will help the remove the top cap off the rear M/C to help relieve the pressure as the fluid is forced back into the M/C.if you try the shim trick push one in from the rear towards the front and one from the front toward the rear. This will retract the pistons square to its bore. If you use only one shim it could “cock” the piston and jamb it in the bore.
