1980 kz650. Installed the front wheel exactly as the manual said. Speedo gear housing rotated easily. Tightened the axle nut to 60 ft-lbs. Now it rotates WITH the front wheel until the projection hits the fork. I’m worries I smashed something as I tightened the axle nut that hard.

Tightened the axle clamps and the speedometer housing stopped rotating. However the wheel is still very difficult to rotate by hand, which was not the case a few days ago before I took it off. Is it possible to over tighten the axle nut?

I think you need to check the speedometer gear tab # 3 and the notch in the speedometer gear drive # 5 to make sure they fit right.
there is also a tab on the fork tube and one on the speedometer housing that prevent the housing from spinning past it's normal position.

The speedo gear drive had to fit into the Slots.
If not you will bent the taps and lock the wheel.
