81 550ltd handlebar was created by fuzz0912
so I'm looking to change the huge cramped bars on 81 550ltd. I'm looking into maybe a euro style or Daytona. Anybody have any experience with them as far as how everything would hook back up like the master cylinder and cables. Would I need to get shorter cables? Also how do they feel I know thats more personal preference but I don't like low bars where you have to lean over. More into the standard flat type if that makes sense. Just a comfort thing more or less.

If they are anything like the 750LTD bars (pretty sure they are) you shouldn't have any problem with the switch block wiring - there may be some extra slack to take up under the tank, but it should be fine. You will probably need to get a new throttle and clutch cable. The ones from the 650 SR should be OK if your new bars aren't too low.
Are the indicators on the handlebars on the 550? If so, you'll want to keep that in mind when deciding on the new bars.
The brake line should be fine, but you may need a shorter one.

I have just swapped the bars on my 750 (there are some photos in my project thread). I got some smaller chopper bars that are the same height, just further forward and wider. It feels a lot better and it was a straight swap. My upper body is still upright but my arms are now in a much more natural position.

Pic below is my 650-CSR w European bars. The stock master cylinder was tilted but worked fine; then the piston started leaking. So then I installed a Honda CBR500 Fr brake mc. It's also tiled but in the other direction since it has a straight handlebar mount, but it also works fine. I originally replaced the stock bars with Flanders BMW Med Tall Street bars which are kind of like Ltd bars, but the hands are more forward & wider >> they were great around town & at lower highway speeds; but at higher speeds, not so much.

1981 KZ650-CSR w Emgo Euro bars & 1000J mirrors.

Thanks for the info. The bars on it now will be ok for now, but they just feel cramped where they are turned in so much. This is a work in progress so if it comes to changing the cables I'm fine with that, but if I don't need to than is rather not. Again thanks for the insight the indicators switch hadn't crossed my mind while I was looking at bars thanks again

Cramped is the word. The stock 650-CSR handlebars jammed my elbows into my sides & were especially uncomfortable when doing low speed sharp turns. The med tall street bars were a great transition. most of the riding during my refurb was around town & those bars were super, plus the mc & cables didn't really need to be changed.

I have found the stock bars on my 1977 KZ650-C1 to be very comfortable. I bought it new and have more than 61,000 miles on it. Ed

Yeah they gotta go . You hit the nail on the head. Slow and sharp and you are digging an elbow in the ribs. Not to mention the way the bars are bent towards you. To me it puts me in a weird position with all the controls. Taking into account this is my first street bike and everything I've had experience in is dirt bikes. but either way I'm not a fan of them. I've got a few good suggestions that I've looked into that seem like they wod work really well.
