KZ750N1 - Rear Brake Pedal - Help getting it on

Hey all,

I am looking at getting my rear brake pedal back onto the splined shaft, and it isn't wanting to go on really at all. I suspect if I'm able to open up the gap normally closed by the clamping bolt, I'd have a much easier time.

Any recommendations for how to safely and easily open that up to allow the pedal to go on easier?

Maybe I am too simplistic, but all I have ever done to accomplish opening up the gap on a brake pedal or shifter lever is inserted a flat bladed screwdriver into the slot and twisted the screwdriver to force the gap open. Works for me.

I have tried that, but unfortunately I lack a bench vice or something to hold it while I do it, so I can't quite get enough leverage to open it up. :(
Was hoping people had fun, crazy methods :)

Maybe you could use a C-clamp instead of a bench vise. clamp it to a work table with a block of wood to protect the brake pedal.

Can you wedge a screwdriver in, and leave it there while you slip the lever on?

Helpful suggestions!

C-clamp and reversing the clamping bolt against a metal flat for the win, pushing the opening open :)

Very clever way to do it, threading a bolt into the brake pedal to push it open.

Your final solution was pretty ingenious, but how do you survive without a bench vise? I use mine all the time for different stuff and I can't imagine not having one.

I don't have a bench vise either, but I do have a selection of various woodworking clamps & C-clamps. a bench vise would be handy, though. :)

I am shocked! I use my vises for all sorts of things and have 3 of them. A big and little one in the basement and a big one in the garage. I couldn't imagine not having at least one. I am not knocking anyone for not having a vise, but it's my third hand a lot of times. The two big ones have interchangeable jaws for different purposes like holding round or flat objects. I just don't know how you make do without one.

If I really needed a bench vise, I probably would have gotten one already, so I guess I don't really need it.
