i have a 79 kz650b3 what sprokets should i use if i wanted to get better performance on the highway but still keep the low end performance as well please help.

Unfortunately it sounds like what you need may be more power on the stock gear setup!

When gearing is concerned, you may gear "lower" to get better accelleration with reduced maximum speeds, or you may gear "higher" for lesser accelleration with increased maximum speeds.

The real question is, how do you ride?

I dig both very high speeds (>110 mph) and quick acceleration, and hence the stock gearing is well suited for me. If you don't breach the 80mph mark, you may gear "lower" (smaller front tooth sprocket or larger rear sprocket) and notice quite a change in accelleration. Colin (Reborn650) races his 650 in the 1/8 mile and I'm sure would be happy to share his gearing with you.

Gearing "higher" is rarely neccessary for our medium sized fours, and only really used when maximum engine life and fuel economy is a concern (our motors last a long time and get great mileage anyway.)

I run a 16/38 on my C1 and it's made highway riding MUCH better. Take off acceleration doesn't seem to have changed much.

Like Mario, I am 16 front and 38 rear, the rear sprocket is a new part made for the Kaw 750 twins. Isn't the other extreme for wheelies, blasting off from a stop light 17 front and 40-42 rear? All I know is that my bike still has plenty of jam on the highway with two up and we are not feather weights. I does however lose some passing power with two aboard, but I'm sure that this is just an extra weight issue. With or without a passenger I run 100 KPH, or 62 MPH at 4,250 rpm. I run 110 KPH or 68 MPH at 4,500 rpm. Considering that these bikes red line at 9000 rpm, this is really loafing engine wise. I run into vibration/buzzing after 5000 rpm or so and this set up is very comfortable for distance travelling and I still hear a little MAC music over the wind. My guess would be around 4,000 rpm or so at 55 MPH. The highways here are all 100 and 110 KPH.

as fast as i can unless the wife is cruising with. thanks. im sure once i get the carbs and tune-up done it might bet better.
