The sprocket cover on my bike has a steel plate bolted to the inside holding a piece of closed cell foam. I've never seen anything like this before. I saw it as just more weight I can remove, now I'm wondering if it is actually a stiffener for the shift linkage on the GPz. This dawned on me after I drilled out the phillips head screws mounting it, and carved up/swiss cheesed the sprocket cover.

ah, well, I'm glad to hear that, therefore I can assume it isn't a stiffener specific to the GPz shifter. I will just assume I didn't screw it up and just ignore it!
