KZ to Z1 Frames Interchange? was created by Gman
I have a chance to buy a 76 KZ 900 but like the looks of the 73-75 Z1 900 better. Does anyone know if the body work of the Z1 (side covers, tail) will fit the KZ frame? It isn't an original paint bike so I'm not worried about ruining an original bike. Thanks for your help.

Tank and tail will fit. You will have problems with the side covers. But maybe some hotrodding could allow you to fit the Z1 sidecovers on the '76 KZ900 frame.

You can see the differences in their respective side cover mounting points on the two frames. For example, the 'front' Z1 side cover mounting points are supported with rear engine case mounting plates, while the KZ900's is part of the frame. Not sure if the KZ900 side cover mounting points are the same as my '78 KZ1000's, but I just tried to mount my '73 Z1's left side cover onto my '78 KZ1000, and found that there would be a bit to work to get it mounted. Maybe you ought to just use '76 KZ900 sidecovers.

make sure you get that one off 76 battery box with the frame.youll just to fab brackets for side covers like Bob said.if you want to graft a rear disc brake brake on there with those Z1 side covers the easiest way ive found is to use a 79-80 ltd style with the remote resivoir to clear z1 sidecover.;) goodluck, happy wrenching!

Thanks for your input. That's what I was afraid of but was hoping I was wrong.
