question on my 530 chain conversion was created by mariozappa
I'm converting my 77's C1 chain from 630 to 530.
When I put the 530 rear sprocket on, the 'inner ring' of metal where the bolt pattern is does not cover the entire top of the sprocket carrier like the old 630 did.
I went down from 42 teeth to 38 on the new sprocket, so I know it's a little smaller, but am I just being anal about how it looks or am I missing something?
I thought I did my research on the chain conversion, but I never thought about that.

My 38T sprocket looks the same - the holes (the large ones, not the bolt holes) vary between manufacturers, don´t worry about it.

Btw, seems like somebody already converted it once (or maybe used a rear wheel from another model), the C1 was born with a 530 chain - the only KZ 650s running 630 are the CSR (H models) and F models from and above 81 F2 (F1 uses 530 too). All the 650s running 630 chain use a 13T front and a 33T rear sprocket.

If you don´t know already, JT Sprockets have a very good online catalogue for reference - click the link below, select "Online catalogue" > "Catalogue" and type "KZ 650" in the lower search window, there you go, you can even see the final drive ratios for different sprocket combos:

No wonder it was so hard to tell the difference!

It looks like the wrong sprocket.

The KZ650's used a couple of different sprocket carriers. The KZ650B & KZ650F requires a sprocket with a 74mm center hole. The KZ650C, D & E uses a sprocket with an 80mm hole.

Could the wheels be from a different bike?

wrong sprocket eh?
The center holes fits nicely down on the center of the sprocket carrier and the bolt holes line up.
This is the one I ordered.

As far as I know, these are the original rims and pieces that go along with it.

Might add that the 38T sprocket i use is for a 750 Twin (didn´t even know you could get 38T for the 650, nice) - it has the larger center hole (80 mm) which was slightly too large for the 650 B sprocket hub. I mounted it anyway and it worked fine - I now use a GPz900 rear wheel with a sprocket hub off a KZ 1000 and the (new) 750 Twin sprocket fits the hub like a glove.

Btw, if you look at your sprocket and the sprocket you linked to at Z1, the shape of the large holes are slightly different, your´s are more rounded, don´t know if that means anything?

It looks like ths is the series sprocket you need - notice the different center size.

Does your old sprocket have any marking on it other than the teeth count?

I thought maybe the JT sprockets reference was wrong - but I checked the Sprocket Specialists reference too - and it shows the same sprocket for the C model - so it does look like the rear wheel might have been swapped on your bike.

We'd happily exchange the sprocket - the only issue is we do not stock the 38T sprocket in the other sprocket - just 40T and 42T.

Jeff, I believe what Mario is concerned about is not the center hole but rather the outer edge of the sprocket hub being visible through the holes - if I read him right the 80 mm center hole fits his hub?
