Harley shocks too heavy for a 550? was created by swampy
I just bought a 1982 kz550 on impulse to turn it into a cafe racer. It needs new shocks and the buzz on this forum seems to be harley sportster shocks on ebay is the way to go. However, I'm a bit concerned about the differance in weight between the two (aprox. 500lbs. vs. 415lbs.). I've been grinding metal off this frame all week and stripping it down to the bones in order to make it even lighter than 415. This bike will never see a passanger, and I'm only about 165lbs, so are the harley shocks too stiff/heavy? Anyone with experience of putting these shocks on a lighter kawasaki like the 550, or general speculation on this application, your input would be appreciatted.
I'm on a budget, so the price is what has me drooling over these harley shocks. thanks, andrew

13.5" is what I took off the 550.

The Harley shocks are adjustable, so if they feel too stiff, adjust them down. Phey will probably work well.

I built a street tracker out of a Single Cyl. Honda Ascot and like you cut away all the extras , It might weigh 300lbs now, I happen to have a set of rear shocks off my Honda 750 Magna ,, I thought the same as you But its not at all that way .. once you sit on the bike you will understand , Like posted before it is about adjusting and center to center
