That's exactely what those pre-threaded holes are there for.
Kawi did at one time offer OEM optional engine/crash guards for a select few of the KZ models. They even offered an OEM optional cable to lock your bike. It fit into a tube in the frame and was covered with a black plastic plug.
Most of the bikes I've seen that had that cable tube were of the GPz variety.
I remember that we had an old set of crash guards still in the package for a KZ750 at the dealership I worked in the 80's.
I think we ended up sending them back one year during the Kawi annual parts buy-back program.
Somewhere out there is a handlebar/bracket/etc that was once an engine guard. :(
