Trying to Avoid Restoration Gotcha's!

Now THATS what I'm talking about! This is valuable stuff guys. Thanks! Some of you can do this in your sleep. Hat's off to you for sharing your experiences with guys like me who are doing their first rebuild. No doubt there will be many learning mistakes I will make, but this will at least minimize them. Keep them coming! Any Brake Gotcha's? I'm getting ready to put together (rebuild master cylinder, calipers and hoses). When I tore down the bike, I had all the brake elements bead blasted and powdercoated. Was black powdercoat on the calipers and (external) brake components a bad idea?

powder coating should hold up good,just dont get on any machined surfaces or bolt holesB) springfield is just a couple hours from here,im going to arkansas here again in a couple weeks to grab another bike from my dads place the blue 74 ill let you know when im going by maybe i can stop and we can compare notes!:whistle: goodluck,happy wrenching!

I'm with wireman on your powder coated calipers. I just used Duplicolor paint from a rattle can on mine, after sanding and priming the calipers. It's held up fine, no blisters.
I don't ride twisties, much, so I'm probably not heating up the calipers like some hard riders, but for normal riding, you should be good. Wish I'd powdercoated, but I was too anxious to RIDE!

Wireman, let's communicate about your trip down. Would love to share notes. I'm outside of Springfield - small town of Crane. 30 min from Branson, 30 from Springfield and about an hour from Eureka Springs. U2U me and we'll exchange info (if its working). Thanks to all for sharing your ideas. I noted on another post Wiredgeorge was commenting about possible issues with wirebrushing and re-using the old bolts and fastners, etc. Which is something I have done. Any experiences there? Is this another Gotcha?:pinch:

Ahhhh....Wax. I was waiting to see if anyone would elaborate as to what type of wax. But I have to ask. Car Wax? Special Chrome Wax? Does polishing compound constitute a wax? I would be interested in any type of chrome bolts you might have that would work on this project. I will be locating and making a run to a plater eventually. Already got steering stem chrome bolt from Z1.

Wireman, seat lock and rear brake pedal/spring are my nightmares! Lucky I don't have to mess with them but once every third moon of the month

Tfh903, Agree with your sequence on the Z1 series. However, how about the Air-box sequence on a KZ900A4?
At the monment I don't know whether to pull everthing off to put the air-box in, or what! Unless, I have a Z1000 air-box and it just don't fit? Somethings wrong.

pull out that one off a4 battery box ,reinstall after airbox. goodluck,happy wrenching!
