CB 650 Fork Removal/ Seal Replacement

I have a 1982 Honda CB 650 Nighthawk. I know this is a KZ forum but this is THE BEST motorcycle forum. I'm in the process of replacing the fork seals. However in my clymer's manual it says that the forks must be removed by a dealer because they need a hydraulic press to take them off. Is this true? I really don't want to take them in, and will try just about anything myself before taking them to the honda dealership.

Do your triple trees have bolts that you can loosen to let the forks slide out? I can't imagine a press being needed to remove forks.. maybe for steering head bearings.

IIRC a press is only required for the bottom bushings on the tubes with manual recommendation to replace if all the copper is worn off. -Duck

I'm sorry my initial post was too vague. I need to take the fork sliders/tube off the fork because I need to replace the fork seals. I have tried to pull the fork sliders off of the fork, butit is like I am running into something. Do I need to gently hammer them off or what?

There is a bolt or allen head screw at the bottom of the fork, where the axle sits. Have you removed that? It will keep the forks from separating.

Yes I have removed that, it was an allen head screw sitting ina recessed postion on the bottom of the forks, but when I go to pull the fork tubes of the main fork it won't come off. The slider will move much farther down then it did before the allen head screw was off, but not all the way.

AFAIK the only thing keeping the piston in the cylinder is the retaining ring that's under the dust boot. There is a backing 'washer' behind this that may need a little coaxing if the aluminum has corroded, but it shouldn't require a hammer.
My CB650 manual has disappeared. I think it's up at the workshop with the bike. I hope to be up there working on the cb650 tomorrow.

Thanks Duck I just figured it out a couple minutes ago. Sorry I'm new to the motorcycle thing, been an owner for less then a year and for some reason I always thought the dust seal was the fork seal.

I removed the retaining ring below the dust cover, and above the fork seal, but I still can't seam to get the fork off and I don't see any washer.
