My started went out on GPz - how hard is it to change?

I was leaving work and I tried to start the 1100 up.

The start motor is spinning but it is not engaging whatever gear connects the starter to the engine.

Do I just replace the starter? I have a spare engine that has a known good starter I could use.

Is this very hard? Do I have to remove the fuel injectors? Years ago my starter went out on another same model GPz and the mechanic told me he didn't have to remove the injectors.

BTW, tonight I get to pushstart the bike so I can load it up the ramp. Ugggh.

injectors are high up are they not??? to change a starter you may have to remove the oil cooler lines, but that sounds like starter is fine...but starter clutch??

Starter clutch is probably bad, and it's internal. I don't know if you can replace the starter clutch without splitting the case on the 1100's or not though.

If its like the 900s and 1000s i think the starter clutch is under the stator cover attached to the stator magnet

Bolted to the alternator rotor like the 750 twins?

I don't have a clue personally, if it's not 750 four or 750 twin related then I'm lost :D

Don't know if this will work but try clicking on it ans see what happens. It's supposed to be a exploded view of your starter from kawasaki.com

May at least get you far enough the site to navigate to your bike. First try this also.

Dadgumit -- so if you haven't already done do, please let me suggest you go to www.kawasaki.com where you can easily register in as a new user and then navigate to your bike and parts diagrams for it. I was able to find the starter for your bike, but unable to send it to you.

This is a really good comprehensive site beneficial to all members.

I think the starter clutch is easily worked on without major teardown on the 1000/1100.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Piece of cake. To access the starter clutch, remove alternator (left side of crankcase) cover. It'll be right there at 2 o'clock.
To remove starter, there is a small sheet metal cover on the left side top of transmission, held on by two 10m head bolts. No, you don't have to remove anything to get to this, but to lift out the starter you will probably have to remove the airbox. No, you don't have to disconect the oil cooler lines.
Hope it's the starter clutch!
