shitty starting...81 gpz 1100... was created by tnutz
It cranks slow when it's cold....but when i stopped after about 45 minutes of riding, and got gas, it barely turned over...also has a new battery in it.

Runs fine and drives fine...

first thing i will check are grounds..they were oxidized where they were crimped in the ring terminal that connects to the battery...Anyone else got anyhting else...i will bring my multimeter home tomorrow i guess and see what else i can find.

I put the charger on it last night for a while, so i will see if it makes a difference when i start it in the morning.

Also, what should my volatges be when running and stopped???

When i bought the bike, the dood at salvage where i bought it from had his multimeter out when i came, and shouted to the other guy that it was charging...(he was sitting on the ground so i am assuming he only checked at the ouput right off of the alternator or whatever it is.)

i am thinking bad grounds to the battery, bad starter, rectifier maybe???

Here is an odd thought...since you stated that your bike has a new battery, you might check and see if it has the right battery. The reason I say that, is that the batteries for the early GPz1100's are no longer available (the one with the sensor). The presumed replacement battery is 12N16 3B...comes w/out a sensor...if your sensor light is not blinking and you have a new battery, see if they grounded the sensor to the frame or something to keep it from transmitting and error message. If it the wrong battery or a charged old battery, this may account for your sluggishness at the starts.

where is the sensor light? guage cluster i assume? and waht does this sensor do?

i asked the man who sold er to me and they said that the Stator volatage was good, so cross that off...I will clean up the grounds first on the battery, then go from there...salvage guy thinks it's probably the starter..

I'll have to look at my material when I get home this afternoon...I only know where it is on a 1982 model (or maybe the 1981 model doesn't even have one??). But, the sensor tells you when the battery is malfunctioning/ going dry.

AND, how can it be the wrong battery techinically if the original w/ sensor is no longer made???

Yes the new one is YB16L-B.

Now, you can buy the sensor that plugs into one of the cells seperately if you need one for the bike.

Sounds like when I replaced my starter; rebuilding wasn't good enough as the starter innards (name escapes me) were too out of round and ate up the new brushes pronto.

check your electrical system, one other thought when was last time bike was tuned up?that could also be part of starting problem,is bike running hot?that could also cause starting problem after riding a while.;)

There is some conflict in the info that I have available to me. You may not have a battery sensor in your bike...check your manual. A battery data source states that the replacement battery for your bike is 12N16-3B (while KawasakiBob states a YB16L-B...which this same source says is the replacement battery for the 1982 model). IF your bike needs a battery with a sensor, then they are not available (as in my case for the 1982 model). Check out your battery and see which one is in the bike...it is a common ploy to sell a bike...throw in a mismatched, but charged battery to get it sold and gone.

well i bought it from a dealer who sells and repairs old bikes, he says it's starter and he will change it for free, so i will try that..bike runs perfect other than starting.

Absolutely! If the dealer is willing to mend the bike for free...great! Keep us posted.

If you buy the genuine Yuasa battery YB16L-B , they'll have screw in caps, not push in style of batteries like Power Source, Yacht, etc.

The sensor can be found from any ....ready? ....
Yamaha Dealer part # 5G2-82120-00-00

They cost around 20-25 bucks depending on the dealer.

The reason I say make sure its a Yuasa battery is because the sensor offered is a screw in style.

(Ya I know, but I worked for Yamaha for 11 years, I can recite half the part numbers by heart)
