Hey everyone!
I was searching for some info concerning my 1978 KZ650 and stumbled onto this site!!! Rockin' Site!!!!
After 28 years, my coils have bit the dust and need replacing. I was thinking of using Dyna coils from Z1enterprises. However, according to them, I need the 5.0 ohm coils (points system to remain) and they are out of stock. On E-bay found a set of 79 KZ1000 coils for a reasonable price. Part number on them is also close to my part number (ZC002 verse ZC004). However, was uncertain on 79's ignition system. Was it points or did it use CDI or something other? Thanks to this site I was able to glance at the wiring diagram for a 79 KZ1000 and see that it is also a point system and therefore those coils should work just fine on my KZ650!! Wooo Hooo!!!
Thanks Guys!!

Terry!

PS. I'm pretty proud and happy with my 78 KZ650 and I'm sure you will start seeing me on this site!! Hope to get to 'meet' you guys in the near future.
PSS. I also had a 1981 LTD1000 for many years. It was my most favorite motorcycle to ever own!!!

3 ohm coils are the standard for points systems on the 650's, except on certain model 1000's that use a ballast resister, and 3 ohm will work on those also as long as the ballast resister is removed.

Thanks for the advice steell. It does appear to me that you know what you're talking about. I've already put in a bid on the KZ1000 coils and the auction is up tomorrow. I'll see if I get out-bid and then go from there. I'm hesitate about buying used coils since they may not last much longer than my coils. However, I want to get my bike back on the road. I also have limited funds and it is a real stretch to buy new coils at this point.
Anyway, if these KZ1000 coils don't work out, maybe I'll go ahead and get the 3.0 coils. Jeff at Z1enterprises told me they would work. They will just wear out points faster than they should wear out. I thought about getting the 3.0 ohm coils and adding a ballast resister.
We'll see how this all ends up playing out.

You could just do away with the points altogether by picking up the electronic ignition off a 81 or newer 650, or any KZ750 four (got to specify KZ750 "four", see my sig, top four are 750 twins), from eBay.

You can probably get the parts for $50 or less, and it can be installed in less than an hour.

I'm considering a mod using HEI modules which will allow the use of Chevy Cavalier coils. They are dual post coils, about the right size, and are only like $20 at Autozone (I know Steell likes the sound of that :P )
Looks like you can use car wires (or Accel-coil plug wires).

The problem is that they are .5 ohms, and I don't want a 2-ohm ballast burning away energy. It's on the back burner since I don't have a need for coils at the moment. But maybe this winter.

Welcome Terry.

A kz1000 electronic Ign can be swapped as well with a little modification. Here's a post on my swap last Winter: Ign.Swap

Well here's the latest developments.
First off, I did get outbid on the KZ1000 coils from ebay. I wasn't willing to spend more than $40 including shipping and I guess someone else was. ebay has another auction for a complete DynaIII system I'm watching. That would be great. However, I think it will go beyond what I'm willing and able to pay for at this time. I could get lucky, we'll see.
Additionally, I have some friends who have a couple of junk parts bikes that still have coils on them. One is a Yamaha, early 80's 850, don't know what model or exact year. Only 'problem' is that the coils are set up for a single plug, not two. The bike has 3 coils on it. Can't seem to find the fouth coil. Perhaps it was only a three cylinder, the engine itself is long gone. Anyway, I might go pull those coils and try to use them. Free is Good!

:P B)
I won the Dyna III ignition system with 3.0 ohm coils off of ebay that I was hoping to.

Now I will just have to adapt the KZ900 / KZ1000 system to my KZ650. With the shared experience from Rob (Thanks!!) this should be doable and then my ignition system will be good and very maintenance free!!
Wooo Hoooo!!!!

Sorry, not yet. It won't work for ponts, though.

I'm going to try them with a HEI mod, but it'll be awhile before I can get to it.
