Well my battery isnt charging, i think it's my r/r but i didnt troubleshoot it yet. can I use almost any r/r to replace it with? i am thinking about getting one off of ebay. it's for my 84 ltd 700 shaft. what should my next step be? (you are probably gonna say get a voltmeter and troubleshoot that charging syetem) which is planned on... i even have the flow chart printed out!

OR you could just get one that actually came from the same model... 84 ZN700 regulator
FWIW, that regulator (part# 21066-1055) fits a plethora of Kaws!
86~93 KLF300 (Bayou)
86/87 ZL600 (Eliminator)
85~93 ZX600 (Ninja)
85 VN700 (Vulcan)
86~93 VN750 (Vulcan)
91/92 ZR750
84/85 ZN1100 (LTD)
87~93 VN1500 (Vulcan)

It may also fit some newer models, but the cross-reference software I have only covers up to '93.

BTW, if you run across an extra set of gauges (or at least the inner speedo unit) for a ZN700 lemme know.
My speedometer gave up the ghost (no longer available through Kawi either :( ) a couple of weeks ago and I need another one

Covina, So Calif!

well i did the troubleshooting chart and since i am getting like 8 volts on my yellow wires it must be the stator, not the r/r that is the problem. (the problem is that my battery is not charging at all and the bike runs ONLY on battery power; disconnect the battery, the bike dies.) now, on to these questions: where to get one at a low cost? is it zn700 specific or can someone cross referance it for me? is it hard to replace?

i just rebuilt a new 318 for my dodge from the oil pan to the intake so i have a little mechanical ability but not much experience with motorcycles.

thanks

As long as the number of wires and the connectors match, then 650-750 stators should work.

If you can't find one, send me a PM as I think I might have a spare GPz750 stator here somewhere.

Disconnecting the battery, even on a working charging system, while the bike is running will often kill the bike. That is not necessarily a sign of a bad charging system. It's also a very bad idea to do that. If the charging system was working, the regulator can't regulate properly without a battery (or battery eliminator device) and you may fry some electricals.

If that 8 volts was 8v AC, wire-to-wire (3 yellow wires, not to ground), with the wires disconnected from the rec/reg, then yes, sounds like the stator, or the yellow wires going to the stator.
