Clean it up some before anything. I do not know what it is but in looking at the stock wiring diagram there are a couple of connections that have 2 connections. From the location of it in the pic I would guess it is part of the fuel level sensor, but it is just a guess.

I agree with Tex you can see the tape just past the plug . That’s a Bob cobb repair.

Well, this is a 46 year old motorcycle that I'm working on. Things happen over 46 years I'm told.

Bike came out of very rural Iowa so who knows?

AFAIK non of the KZ650 ever had a fuel level sender unit.
It looks like more like the disintegrated leftover of a 3 spade connector plug for the turn signal alarm beeper, just my guess.

The 78 SR is a D1 or D1a and they did have the mentioned device.Here are wiring diagram for both

This appears to be true of all the models intended for US and the rest of the world.
