My tachometer stop working and the speedowirer got damage, because it’s physical stopped in the speedo and the wheel go further…

If i take of the speedo and shake it’s normaly start working again… until it happens agan…

I think I have been able to look it one time i turned up side down…


anybody know? Can I fix these?

These are a couple examples if they are mechanical, the rare beveled glass 1977 and later dual KMH/MPH. A one of my cabinets jam packed with bits of the same.

Is there a fair chance I will find the fault by opening up?

I want to renew the harness and by new mordern speedo… but don’t have time right now, so was hopening to get the old working for now…

100 usd or so for a used one on ebay… sp not super cheap :(

Is the back a shade of greenish or metal? I think Martin CSR here has some info on the later ones! The internals are basically the same it getting to the "stuff" that is the issue.

Probably the only easy thing you can try is to lubricate it. using a fine oil. maybe sewing machine oil or something like that. I have some air tool oil that might work, but I have no idea if whatever oil you choose would attack the plastic gears. Put a few drops into the meter where the cable connects. ps: don't store the meters upside down. 

For alternative meters I would look into ZRX or Zephyr meters.  These have a mechanical drive speedometer and electronic tach which I think should be simple enough to wire up (need: power wire to meter and signal wire from black igniter wire that goes to an ignition coil). The redline on these will be higher than a 650, but on the ZREX you can easily repaint the redline on the meter face since the meters are easily disassembled. 

Didn't see asphalt's last post. doh. Need photo of entire meter assembly.  If his meters are like mine, then disassembling them is the same as the earlier meters, so he'd have to un-crimp the clamp and proceed. From the pic his meters are similar to 750E meters.

Lubricate and let it run for some hour on my eletrical screw driver? And see if it’s look up? Have broken 2-3 speedo wires want to try to don’t damage more :)

the problem has been that working for days and then it blocks again… I was thinking it was vibration that cause the week point to be activated…

Good Morning! If it helps, "lubing-it-up" won't fix what seems to be Your problem. There is no physical connection between where the cable connects to the action of the needle. It is however connected directly via either worm or straight cut plastic gearing to the odometer and trip register wheel assemblies. Could be as simple as some sort of insect climbed up inside and made a home? Or , because of the miles, worn-out drive unit? Wiggle the square rotating sleeve where the cable inserts, a lot of side to side play?
