As for now I've just removed the sensor drive sleeve altogether.
I still want to ride the bike before winter sets in.
The replacement sleeve I ordered is correct for the year and bike type.
I ordered the sleeve from partzilla. Kawasaki part number 41064-1006
The speed sensor itself was from an 1982 bike also.
I'm clueless where to go from here.
Actually here is a follow up. There is another drive sleeve. 41064-1008
From the diagrams it looks like this is probably the one I need.
Unfortunately everywhere I'm looking show this part as unavailable.

that drive end that fits into the sensor looks nothing like mine. Mine doesn't have rectangular slots cut into it. Mine has a hooked slot arrangement.
I'll see if I can find a pic anywhere soon the net.

Well according to the khi website parts diagrams mine should have one of two different versions but mines not like either of these either.

Going back to check some different models to see if I can find anything similar. Can't find anything but mines kinda like a hooked slot.

Z1000J2 somewhat modified!

You have the wrong drive sleeve, see below (Best of luck finding one, I had a quick look and there are none being advertised currently - you may need to make your own) The photo's are from my 82 "K"

Thanks Warren and Wookie
Yes it's obvious that I have the wrong part.
The 41064-1008 sure looks like the correct part.
Unfortunately looking around no one seems to have one available.
I'll probably have too look for a used part.
I wonder if the one I have could be cut to work properly ?
Wookie how tall is the 1008 part on your bike ?

If the OD is 30mm I don't see why not

I am coming to this topic late, but have been looking at part lists etc.  I do not have an answer and it appears that Wookie has given you what you are looking for?  I do have a question and do not mean to make your search any harder.;  But in looking at part lists it appears that all of the sensors (called case-assy) as having the same part# 11021-1011 so how does the 2 different receiver part#s work with it?  41064-1008 the one you need and can not find and 41064-1006 the one you purchased but will not fit? What is it that I am not seeing correctly?

From what I can see the 410641006 sleeve is used with the 410781013 sensor/drive which is for the "mechanical" speedo on the 82 "M" model
the 410641008 sleeve is used with the 110211011 sensor/drive for the electronic speedo on the 82 "K" model

Thanks for the reply Wookie! What you indicate makes sense to me. I knew I was not seeing something correctly.

I'm still not having any success here. I modified one of the drive sleeves so it falls right into the sensor slots. The correct sleeve seems to be nonobtanium.
So engaging the sensor slots is now proven while not mounted on the wheel.
But I still don't get engagement after being installed on the wheel. The odometer does move a bit once in a while, then stops.
Now I am thinking that the front wheel that was on the bike is not the correct wheel.
Are there identifying part numbers on the wheel to be sure it is the correct one for the 82 KZ1000K mentioned in the title ?
The brake discs line up perfectly with the calipers.
The axle spacing seems to be correct.
I'm at a loss here.
