NO SPARK THROUGH PLUG CAP was created by aquaholic
Hey fellow riders, 1982 KZ1000 J2, engine rebuilt, new 7mm copper core plug wires and new plugs, No spark anywhere. When I remove the spark plug caps I have great spark from the wire ends to the head nuts. I took and OHM meter across the spark plug cap while disconnected from the wires and have a 4.70 reading on the 20x scale. Not being a wise electrical person I am assuming that there shouldn't be any resistance between the spark plug wire and the plug. I checked Z1 and Partzilla figuring that I would just buy new caps (not sure if they go bad or not) and of course they are not available. Any help anyone can give me would be life changing lol.. I'm a 100% disabled vet and this has been my "project Bike" for the last 20 years. I just want to ride it once again before I sell iy annd get something smaller.. Thanks in advance and please have a great day.

Normally either the lead, the cap or the plug will have a resistance for white noise suppression. You appear to have resistive caps so what plugs are you using ?

As Wookie said, you appear to have resistor plug caps, which is fine as long as you have non resistor plugs. If your plugs have an "R" in the code they will be resistor plugs.
You don't want more than one resistor in the line per cylinder.
Alternatively, you can run with no resistors. Ie resistor free plugs and caps.

Sounds right in line with NGK HT caps. They are 5ohms. Might want to look inside the cap. If there is just a small hole then the threaded cap on the spark plug needs to come off. If you have that threaded cap off and a large hole is seen in the HT cap then that might be your issue. Did you test the HT cap for continuity.

So you recommend getting the B8ES Plugs instead of the BR8ES currently installed ? This bike ran last year before I rebuilt the head. I'm so confused lol. I appreciate the repy

I did check the OHM readings and continuity. When checking for continuity the scale starts at 1 and intermitantly and very quickly jumps to 1.687 and then goes right back to 1

FSM says the US model should used B8eS.

Ngk are phasing out NON resistor plugs and people get sold resistor plugs thinking they are the same. They are not!.
If you can't get NON resistor ngk' B8es try and get Denso W24es which are a better plug and do not have resistors in them.

Just a few electrical checks.
meter on DC V
key on
ignition on
bike not running
all connections to the coils must remain connected through testing

black probe on battery negative terminal (terminal is the metal part of the battery)
red probe on battery positive terminal
note voltage to the tenth decimal place (12.2v)

move red probe to each ignition coil terminal.
should be 4 readings
note voltage to the hundredth decimal place(12.04v)

move red probe to cylinder head near the plug hole.
note voltage to hundredth place.
voltage should ideally be 0.00V
any higher than 0.50v then you have too much resistance in the ground circuit.

Don't leave the bike ignition on for longer than 5 minutes to prevent coil overheating.

Turn off bike
