Possible to damp a fuel guage?

Thanks Guy, not to sure if you read that to the end but it didn't give a conclusive answer. 
Op ended up buying a specific unit designed for the job. I've got several different size capacitors in the electro box and I'll have a play tomorrow. In parallel to the sender seems correct to me but electrickery is called electrickery for a reason.

Apologies, it was just a quick search as I am still working at the moment (silly season) the aim is to dampen the voltage fluctuations rather than change the voltage (which a resistor does) I am sure some of the electronics engineers on here can advise ref calculating a value for the capacitor and maybe take some of the guesswork out of it

The sender seems to have a resistance of 100 ohm empty and 5 ohm full if it helps any calcs. 

OK, just to round off the thread. After trying capacitors upto 1000uf in both series and parallel on the sender wires it made absolutely zero difference. So figuring to do what I was after achieving would require some serious circuitry and far beyond a simple fix my thoughts turned to a mechanical fix to the float/arm itself. Figuring if I could add some permanent friction between the arm and the sender body which would then reduce the immediately floppyness of the arm it would then result in what i was after. Once I decided to explore the mechanical possibilities the answer was obviously to put the arm under spring tension. The arm is still totally free to move but it takes a very little pressure or a slight jiggle, as if when ridding, to get it to move. I'll do a more elegant version once it's been tested on the road.

Thanks, that would certainly do what I was trying to achieve and as I suspected a far more complex circuit than I can be arsed to get involved in for what is no more than a niggle as outlined in my original post.

Just out of interest are these this erratic from new or is this down to a failure of an internal dampening circuit/mechanism in the gauge 

Don't know Guy, it's not exactly erratic just over sensitive to road gradients and throttle use. To give you an idea, from zero to full manually moving the arm the guage takes two seconds and vice versa so when fuel is sloshing around in the tank you can imagine the needle movement. The only way to get any real idea how much fuel you have is to be stationary on level ground.
