has anyone put modern electronic gauges into the stock Z1 bezels/cases?

One member here put a speedhut gauge in his GPZ gauge cluster, I will be doing the same thing eventually.. You can order them in a number of configurations .

ive used speedhut gauges on several bikes, good product and excellent customer service. they can do custom gauge faces if you want a super OEM look

Yes, Speedhut is the company..   Its not a direct slip in job though, I'm mounting mine inside the gauge housing, it took some fiddling to get it right, I'm also using a remote button on mine, actually I'm fitting it under the trip meter button on the GPZ housing......

Any idea of the cost of one of these? This one for instance?

For anyone that wants to get into the hobby side of things, there's this approach: 

You then end up with something that looks completely original, but is all electronic; it would work for both the speedo and the tacho. The pickup is probably a Hall sensor.

Or, I suppose you could buy one of these, strip the guts out of it and build it into an original housing & face. Not quite sure what to make of the wiring connections though: Ebay item No. 165332024251, as I can't post the link.

That tachometer listed on EB.UK is made in china, so it may not work right or for very long.  There have been plenty of reports about cheap chinese meters failing, especially the under $20 variety. It can be kind of a gamble.

For a number of years, my wife drove a Chevy SSR. All of its instruments were powered by Chinese stepper motors. After 5 or 6 years they began to go all whack-a-doodle. There was a lot of chatter about it on the forum I belonged to, and the only solution was to disassemble the dash and all the connected bits, remove the instrument panel and replace every one of those little motors with ones built in a country that understands electricity and gives a crap about quality.
Owning that truck was a lot like owning an Italian exotic.
