Mini ATM fuse box. was created by martin_csr
Would a mini ATM fuse box be suitable for a motorcycle?
Asking because CycleTerminal sells some weatherproof units w various accessories. see link below.
Seems like I read somewhere that these mini blade fuses should not be used on a motorcycle. don't remember where I saw that. Thanks.

Why not use mini blade fuses, they do the same job in modern bikes and cars.

The wiring harness I have on my Z1 uses full size blade fuses and I've had zero issues.  If anything, I would HIGHLY recommend converting over to any type of blade fuse as they're available nearly everywhere as compared to the glass fuses that came with these bikes.

Here's the harness I have:

I see no reason why you can’t use mini fuses - an amp is an amp so as long as it’s the right fuse rating and the holder is rated to at least the size of fuse being used. Just be careful that you don’t exceed the total rating of the holder. I have seen some with 5 or 6 locations that are individually rated up to 30a per location but the total the fuse is rated at is 100a

I agree.  I don't see any issue with the ATM fuses themselves.  They are available in ratings up to 30A, which is above the 20A main fuse used on most KZs.  The fuse itself should work fine.  However, the holder, the terminals, and the wire also need to be rated for not just the operating current but the fault current (the current it takes to actually blow the fuse).

Ideally the fuse box would have a detailed spec sheet that called out the individual current limit and total limits Wookie58 mentioned.  It could very well be the case that this fuse holder is only rated for 15A even through a 30A fuse would fit in it.  But in general it looks like a nice part with correct crimp terminals as well as gaskets.

This page claims it's rated up to 30A:   ceautoelectricsupply.com/product/metri-p...ini-fuse-holder-kit/

The reality is that the KZ fuse box clips and wiring are under-rated for the 20A fuse that is used.  In my experience, when the 20A fuse blows is melts the plastic around the fuse clips and discolors the wire.  My guess is that those Cycle Terminal fuse boxes can handle a higher current than the stock KZ fuse box.

Thanks for the replies. It may have been the wire gauge for the particular fuse box that I saw. I forget.
At CT I was looking at the rectangular 4 blade fuse box w the available clear covers & mounting bracket.
It uses 12-14 AWG. Is that big enough? The wire going into the stock fuse box is kind of fat, but I have no idea what gauge it is. doh.

ps: someone was asking about a blade fuse box the other day. main reason for asking.

Hi Martin, if you look at my elec fault finding guide in the FAQ section there is a link to a calculator for cable sizes in relation to expected current requirements. Op for one with the smallest volt drop
