Hazard blinking rate

More

Hazard blinking rate was created by Claude.
On the J3 I'm currently working on, the turn signals work as they should and blink at what I consider to be the normal rate (didn't calculate the flash/second ratio though...).
However, when I turn the hazard switch on, they blink at about twice the rate which I consider to be too fast.

Curiously, I also checked on my J2 and '81 1000 LTD and they all act the same.
On the J3, I switched both turn signal and hazard relays but with no change in the output.

QUESTIONS
1) Is this normal?
2) How can I lower the blinking rate of the hazard lights?
Thanks!

Many KZs have two flasher relays, one for the hazards and one for the indicators. This is because the blinking rate is determined by the current draw, so if you use the same for both, the hazards will flash twice the speed, as there are twice the number of bulbs. Bikes that do share the same relay will blink twice as fast with the hazards on - but I don't think that's the case with yours.

But if you use the same relay model for both the indicators and the hazards, the hazard lights will blink at twice the speed. This would be my guess - someone has replaced your hazards flasher with the same as your indicator flasher. This link indicates that you have two flashers - 27002-011 and 27002-016 - but I don't know which is which.

The other option is to replace it (or both) with a solid-state/LED relay. These blink at the same speed no matter what current, and allows you to put in LED bulbs if you wish. Finding round ones that fit where the original ones do is the hard part.

Search ebay or Amazon for SHIN YO 3-Pin relay. It´s load/current independent for bulb or LED use and you can adjust the blinking rate if needed.
I use the same relay with no problems. The blinking rate is adjustable between 30-90 pulse per minute. The green wire have to connect to ground (frame) or battery negative.

Maybe I did not explained the situation correctly.
My three KZ have two relays each; one for the turn signals and one for the hazard.
On the three of them, the hazard blink about twice as fast as the turn signals.
On my J3, I swapped over the two relays. ie; I installed the hazard relay on the turn signals circuit and the turn signal relay on the hazard circuit. Result: Turn signal blinks faster than with the original turn signal relay (but at a rate that could be acceptable, even if a bit fast). But the hazard blink twice as fast as with the original hazard relay at a rate that is WAY too fast.
On my OP, I wrote that there was no change after the relay swap which is wrong.

I'll give a look at the relay Scirocco wrote about. Could be interesting to have an adjustable unit.
Thanks for your replies!!

Just looked for the SHIN YO 3-Pin relay; it would cost about $65 for seller one and $95 from seller 2!! I was expecting a few bucks...
Any idea for a less expensive option to slow down a bit the hazard rate?

This is what I used when I swapped in all LED’s. It even fit in the rubber band and mounted in the OEM location.

You are right, my nick name is choosen after VW Scirocco MK1

He was build in 1975 as a TS Model with 1,6 Liter 85 hp engine and 3 gear automatic transmission.
Now powered by 2,0 Liter 160 hp fuel injected engine and 5 gear manual transmission.

65 - 95 Dollar for one relay is a way to expencive!!! I pay only 23 Euro or 25 Dollar here in Germany.

In fact, the 65-95 costs I mentionned are in CDN$ and include shipping to my place.
The final costs are about the same for both sellers on ebay.de.
The two other links you provided do not ship in Canada.

Mikaw's alternative (superbrightleds) looks to be the best cost wise.

Many thanks to the both of you!

Your car looks great!!!
Many years ago, I had a 1981 Scirocco S with 5 gear MT. Even with its stock engine (1.7L if I remember well), it was a blast to ride!!
Would love to have another one and restomod it but I think rust ate all of the remaining units...
Thanks for the memory!
