I’d focus on the ignition. Carefully inspect the entire harness. It might have melted wires together that now make the ignition switch inoperable

the main fuse when i hot wired it bike started right up but shut down within 2min started smelling and seeing smoke coming fron under th tank was wondering if coils might be the problem
they aer the originals have to check if its getting spark to the plugs and ill check the ignition all the wires under the tank seem to be intack put a new harness on 3 years ago Now if i connect the battery lights turn singnals horn all work but i dont have to the key in and if i put the key in doesnt change anything

Grab your voltmeter

Meter set to DC V
Bike must be on and everything connected.

Black probe on negative battery post(metal part of the battery. Not the battery cable)
Red probe on positive battery post
What is your voltage?

Move your red probe to your coils.
Measure each terminal.
What are the 4 voltages

Shut off bike

DOES YOUR MEANING OF ON  REFER TO BIKE RUNNING ? AS SOON AS TERMINALS ARE CONNECTED EVERYTHING IS ON WITHOUT KE;Y IN IGNITON .MOTOR TURNS OVER WITH STARTER BUT WILL NOT START. SO  TO USE THE VOLT METER DOES THE BIKE HAVE TO BE LITTERLY RUNNING OR JUST ON ?

Not trying to butt in as F64 is an expert troubleshooter, but seeing if the bike powers up by connecting the battery cables? You should assume the coils are getting power also. Untill known otherwise. If they are you can burn them out quickly have power to them without the bike running. F64 has correctly directed you to test power at the coils first. Just dont leave the battery connected too long till you know.

And no he’s not requiring you to have the bike started and running. By “on” he means 12v on

sorry,
your key switch is always on for some reason.
the kill switch needs be set to "on"
just don't hit the starter button.
i need to know if your coils are getting the exact voltage that you read at the battery.

Sounds like the loose battery cable fried the harness.  Also, not sure on the KZ but the Z1 has a spare fuse holder.
