1984 GPZ1100 Fuel Gauge OHMS was created by fencelizard1
New to KZRider. I just bought a 1984 GPZ1100. The fuel gauge is not working correctly. It will sometimes show accurately but usually shows empty.  Does anyone know what the ohm readings should be on the sending unit? I had a range from 2 to 53 from empty to full.TIA.

FWIW,  the range for the unit in a 1982 GPz550 is 1 to 117
sounds to me like you have a wiring problem, intermitent

I took the unit out of the tank and tested it directly, do you still think the unit is good/accurate?

Fifty three seems awfully far from 118. I’d say no.

disconnect the two pin connector to the fuel level unit under the tank, turn the ignition on, the gauge should read empty
now short the two wires together, the ones going toward the gauge (not the tank) the gauge should read full
if the gauge reads as above, your gauge is good and the fuel level unit *MAY* be bad

I say may because there is a possibility you have a intermitent short in your wiring
however, you could also have an intermitent in the level sender
rust develops on it, and the consequence is high impedance or infinite impedance which would give an empty indication at your gauge

I am currently fighting this myself, I located a used level unit and hopefully it works properly
I am also going to attempt o fix my old one that may destruct it (which is why I bought the other one)
if not, there are places that claim they have them, although perhaps not the same exact one that came in your and my bike
yours is a 52005-1039
mine is a -1025, the difference is that you'd have to bend the float down since it rides a little higher, otherwise it's the same
there are also other bikes with a unit that might be usable without bending if you search other Kawi models from back in the 80's

also, the unit should read 1-5 ohms at full
about 113-118 at empty

BTW, if yours reads to 53, then the gauge would indicate somewhere around half full, not empty

I will check this in the next few days, thanks. I did re-test the float and was a little more thorough in making good contacts and did get similar reading to spec ie3ohms to115ohms.

your level unit sounds spot on
check for oxidation of the connector terminals, and that the wiring is good, It is possible some strain was put on it causing an intermitent connection
