Check the clutch interlock, 2 black wires. One crosses over to the start button and the other goes to the start relay. Start with making sure those are all connected and corrosion free

I wasn't aware that an A1 had a clutch interlock.

Since you tore things apart and put them back together your problem is likely something you did or didn't do.

Did you connect the ground wire(s) on the lower right rear area of the engine?

Is your starter wire connected to the solenoid?  What happens if you try to short out the solenoid?  Does the starter motor engage?

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

When mine acted up in the same manner I sprayed some contact cleaner in the start button area of the handlebar switch and it took care of it.  Not saying that's your problem per se, but it worked for me.  I also discovered I was missing a ground strap and installed a new one.  No problems since then.

Did you test for power there or does the starter button just not do anything?
I would check for power at the starter solenoid first as that might be the easiest thing to do.  Then go from there.

I like the response, kinda of committal, but not really unless the fuel is low.  I almost sort of  was on the fence about buying one but now I am not so sure.  Guess I won't.
