New rectifier for 77 Kz650 was created by 504Ghost
I have an early 77 kz650 and I’m looking for a replacement rectifier. All are incredibly expensive that I’ve found$150-$250usd.  But I did find an aftermarket manufactured part from a UK shop. Was wondering if anyone had used it before??

I own a 1977 KZ650-C1 that I bought new back in 1977.  The rectifier died in 2012 and I replaced it with one from Oregon Motorcycle Parts.  Their rectifier number is Model R255aSee 5 & 6 wire rectifiers at www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com/rectifiers3p.html .  It still works like new; I believe it is made better than the original Kawasaki part. I suggest you contact them to ensure that the part number is correct for your bike.  Ed

That bike uses an unusual field coil generator.  Does it use a conventional rectifier, or something special to go with the field coil system?

One option is to convert over to a common three phase system.  Parts could be purchased on ebay for pretty cheap.  I suspect this may be the cheaper way to go but more involved compared to buying a new part to fix your bike.

it is an early 77 kz650b1 with the three bolt cover. Excited coil system

I went with the Oregon motorcycle parts rectifier and regulator. After speaking wi tony over there, he explained how his reg unit will charge better under 4K rpm. Where the stock OEM unit barely charges the battery..

thanks for all the input guys.

a couple follow up questions,  anyone can shoot me a link for a downloadable factory Kawi service manual in pdf form? I found a couple sites, but none with my specific year and model

also looking to upgrade the headlight in the stock OEM. Bucket/gauges/ and plug, any recommendations?

thanks for the space guys

Manual on this site in the Service Manuals section of the Articles tab.

From what I've read the Truck-lite lamps are amazing.  You can also get a shell that uses a halogen bulb.  Lots of sources.  Add a nice high power bulb for even nicer results.

I use a Wagner H6024 halogen headlight in my KZ650.  It works great and is considerably brighter than stock without stressing the wiring.  Below is one place to buy them, but there may be cheaper places.    Ed

Truck-lite's are LED so they are low wattage.  I don't know what size the original bulb it so measuring it would be the first step toward finding a replacement.  7" is common.  Anyway, Amazon has Truck-Lite bulbs so you might want to search around.

My 81 KZ650-CSR had a sealed beam unit. very dim.  So I installed a lens unit & halogen lamp/bulb from a 1982 KZ750 Ltd.  It was a direct swap >> just needed the lens unit, dust cover & bulb.  pretty easy.  and now I can easily carry a spare H4 bulb in my tail-bag.  The lens unit was cloudy, but cleaned up w denatured alcohol.  I'm sure there are brighter options, but the H4 is certainly brighter than the stock unit.
