No power to one coil was created by Cwnordquist
Alright so I recently bought a 1982 Kawasaki KZ750E and it’s been having issues running. So far I’ve discovered that the right coil has 11.8 Volts going to it but the left coil had 0 Volts going to it. I then put a wire from the battery to the coil thinking I’d found my issue but the coil still wouldn’t put out spark so then I thought the coil could be bad too so I took the connecting from the right coil and put them on the left coil and suddenly it had spark so the coil is good. So in short I found out that both coils are good, but the left coil has no power going to it and when I do put power to it, it still doesn’t spark. Could this be the igniter or maybe the pickup coils, or any suggestions? I have gotten the bike to run a little, and occasionally it would sound like it was running on all four cylinders but would start running bad again.

There are two wires, 12 volt from battery, second wire goes to points or pickup.
Check both battery wires for 12 volts, if 0 repair harness.

If one red coil wire has power then the other should have the same.
Click the filebase tab above and search for "750" and you will find several wiring diagrams.

Power for ignition comes from battery to ignition switch to kill switch on right handle bar cluster to the main harness under the gas tank where there should be a soldered junction with 2 red wires going to coils and one red wire going to ignitor. If one red wire does not have power then there is likely a break. You will have to cut back the harness covering and repair. This junction will be close to where the wires from the right handlebar cluster enter the main harness.

Hi Cwnordquist,

You may have a couple of things going on.

Let's figure out your coil power issue first.
meter set to DC V
everything must be connected, do not disconnect any connectors.
ignition on/engine off

Black meter probe on negative battery post(the metal part of the battery)
Red meter probe on the positive battery post
note voltage

Move the red battery probe to
coil 1 positive terminal---note voltage
coil 1 negative terminal--note voltage

coil 2 positive terminal-note voltage
coil 2 negative terminal-note voltage

I'm not sure if there is a timer on the igniter that shuts down voltage after awhile to prevent coil overheating.
You may have to turn off the ignition and turn it back on if the reading seems strange.
