Kz1000p Pursuit Light Always on was created by 09marty
hello,
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. The pursuit lights on my 2001 kz1000p are always on regardless of switch position or if the bike is on or off. Thanks in advance!

I would disconnect the lighting connector at the pursuit switch. Then check the operation of the switch with the meter.

There is a "pursuit relay" . You can see it in the lower left corner of F64's diagram. If you pull it out, theoretically the lights should go off. ...unless somebody was fooling around with a soldering iron etc. :)

It's not really a relay from what I can tell. It's drawn just as a simple splitter for the power. Maybe it's designed to alternate the lights. There is no independent source of power going to it, so disconnecting the connector at the switch should also kill the lights, like F64 said. The green/white wire is the one powering the pursuit relay, but it is also coming from the pursuit switch, so it should be dead when you turn the switch off.

If neither solution kills the pursuit lights, then somebody has definitely re-wired the lights to be on all the time.

The pursuit lights are likely wired directly to something like the running lights or headlight. It's a common hack when the cops decommission the bike.

If you have the full front fairing like you see in my avatar, then you'll want to look for the white and green wire inside the fairing and use that as your positive wire for the lights. Make sure to do a circuit test on it though, as it might have been cut or just not working due to old age. But that wire links to the pursuit switch on the right hand controls. It's that switch on the very top that has an off, M, and P setting.

Ignore the M setting, it does nothing. It used to be M for Match Speed, as in when a motor unit in the 70s, before the advent of radar, was pacing someone, they had two speedometers and one of them only ran when the M setting was on, and they used that to know how much faster the speeder was going. For some reason Kawasaki kept the 3 position switch and never removed the M, despite replacing the second speedometer with a tachometer.

If you need new connectors for the fairing, it's an AMP connector. Part numbers for both ends:
AMP 1-480274-0 and AMP 1-480277-0
I replaced mine a few months ago to fix issues with my pursuit lights.
This is where I got the connectors.
www.elliottelectronicsupply.com/amp-conn...74-0-1-480277-0.html
It's an exact fit because it's the exact same connector Kawasaki used.

Let me know if you have any more issues...

Also what's with all the Ps showing up on the forums lately?

Thanks for the tidbit on the "M" setting.

And yes, there does seem to be a cluster of P bike discussions.

Yeah, the M setting drove me nuts trying to find the wire that goes to it until I made friends with someone who used to ride Kawasaki police bikes in the 70s and 80s and got the lowdown on it.

He also said that with the KZ1000-P, the cops had to carry around lead substitute because the bikes are tuned to using gasoline with TEL in it, but throughout the 80s and 90s it became increasingly more difficult to find TEL gas. He's unsure about the ones from the 90s through to '05 though because he retired in the early 90s.
