No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationJust recently identified the ignition issue in my bike lies in one of my ignition pickups being bad, leading to a lack of spark on the 2/3 cylinders. The bike in mention is a 1981 KZ650 CSR H1 model. Everything is stock except for Jardine 4-2 drag pipes which carbs have been jetted properly for. Igniter is good, wires/contacts have all been cleaned, and coils/wires/plugs are all recently replaced.

My question, is if anyone knows the compatibility between the pickup coils for the KZ650 which is no longer manufactured, and the ones that are still manufactured for the KZ1000. The two parts I'm referencing are listed below. The only difference it appears is the oil pressure light wire is wired into the loom of the pickup coil of the 81 650 pickups, but I can cut that out and wire it in place beside the kz1000 wires. The rear metal plate appears to be a slightly different shape, but the wires and connector all appear to be the same. If nothing else, it appears the pickups from the 1000 could be unbolted and placed on the backplate of the 650 plate.

From the research done by loudhvx: if the pickups look the same, then you can swap them. Here's the info from my notes:

81 650 Pickup coil. See reply by loudhvx --- swapping pickups & screw Info.
By loudhvx: You can use any KZ pickup that looks like the one you have. They are interchangeable.
Pay attention to the screws. Some are steel and some are brass. They should not be swapped. <<<<<<<
You can even use two of the same pickups (same color wires) but then splice the wires as follows:
Red corresponds to blue. Black corresponds to yellow.

The wires will come out on top instead of the bottom, so you will just have to route the wires carefully, and may have to extend them.

But you can get pickups from any inline-four KZ that had mechanical advance.
Everyone out there with single bad pickups should get together and combine their good pickups.
It's just a matter of two screws and splicing two wires.
END. (do not swap screws --- see note above).

As usual, thanks Martin!

As a side note, save the old timing plate and good pickup as people often need one. You can even use a 1-4 pickup in place of a 2-3 pickup and vice versa. Just the wire colors and routing will change.

Here's a link to the magnet polarity and screw locations in case you mix them up.
