Just bought a 1977 kz650 for $300.
looking for a place to get a new wire harness.
the person I got it from said it had a short in it and it melted a few different wire.
right now the gauge lights work but know other light.
Will not crank over with the starter button.
need a few other parts as well.

Any ideas or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

If I were you I would get the manual and start looking through the wiring and try and figure out what wires are melted and why .You might be able to just change out the bad wires .But first you need to figure out what caused them to melt in the first place .

Theres lots of help here and we can talk you through issues .

post some pics of the melted wires .

Dang nice score. You definitely have room to spend a few bucks and have a nice bike still at a good price.

You can get most everything from vintage connections to fix the harness

See if you can find the rectifier. Look at the wires near it or attached to it. If they look particularly burnt, then you might want to get a new one before connecting a battery to the new harness (if/when you get one). It is not unheard-of for a rectifier to short out and melt wires. Separate rectifiers, (like what your bike came with originally) are usually pretty inexpensive.

Thanks everyone for the help and replies.

Here is what i have found so far.
1. There are two different types of coils that i dont beleive that are hooked up right.
I dont beleive they are going to the right plug firing order either. There seems to be a extra wire going to nothing as well.

2. The rectifier wires going in to it does not look burnt or discolored. Will get a pic this weekend .

3. Going over the rest of the harness doent seem to bad can fix or run new wire if i need to.

Here are some pics.
If you see anything that i need to do please let me know
Thank you

Pictures didn’t post. After you add files make sure you hit either “insert” or “insert all” and don’t hit back after you insert

Without seeing were the green (unconnected) wire goes I’d guess it was just dead headed and replaced with the green or black from the dyna s

I did! But if you read the dyna s it’s says “any combination of “ as long as they are 3ohms or more. Not optimal but it might work to sort things out and get the bike started

I just went out and looked. It seems they bypassed the black and green wire and ran it up to the coils. It looks awful so i will redo all of that.
I have 3 wires coming from the dyna red, black and white.
Red splices into the red and yellow
I am guessing black should go to black
And white to the green.

And yes the guy put one new coil on it. it looks to be a emgo coil wich i need to check the ohms online.
I will be replacing both soon. Just want to figure all the wiring out first.

Trying to figure out plug firing order now.
I drew a scetch of what they are now. Dont think its right.
