Ignition Points Gap was created by C4vette
I have a strange issue with my 1975 kz400s. I'll keep it brief. When my bike sits for a while it won't start up because the points gap adjusts to the closed position all by itself. Now when I go to adjust the gap by turning the crank the points don't open at all so I can't find the spot where it opens up to its widest point to re-gap it. Why would it do this I didn't touch anything. The bike only has 10,000 miles and the ignition system works fine once the bike is running. I have a new points and condenser I can install but I'm not sure if that would fix it, there's gotta be a reason why this happens. Thanks for your help.

If the screws are in good condition, this should never ever happen. There must be some mechanical failure happening with the screws or the timing plate or the points themselves. Sometimes the cheap knockoff points are not drilled precisely and the pivot shaft hole is elongated. When the pivot moves out of place, the gap can disappear or become excessive.

You have to very closely inspect the points, especially if they are new. There are many counterfeit points coming from China. Some work ok, many are garbage.
