Speedo Cable

Folks.
My speedo cable has come out of the speedo, it looks like metal fatigue and the end may still be in the speedo. I have a pic of the cable end that goes into the speedo and an upside down pic of the entry into the speedo itself where it looks like the remainder of the cable is.
Ideas and how to remove the ofending part.
New cable has been ordered.

Looks like you lost or rip off the knurled nut on the speedp cable.

Can't see the broken end of the drive cable in the speedo, so we're taking your word a broken piece is in there. We'd be surprised if the broken piece didn't just drop out under it's own weight. If you can indeed see a broken piece in the speedo drive, try this:
The flexible drive cable is steel. Remove the drive cable from it's sheath, and cut off a convenient length of the flexible cable. Probably about 6" to 12" in length, but no longer than necessary. Grind or file the tip of one end flat & square, with no burrs. Place the strongest magnet you can find on the other end, along it's length, not directly on the end. This will magnetize the entire length of the cable. Gently probe the flat/square end of the flexible cable (opposite end from the magnet) into the speedo drive housing. If the broken piece is not jammed into the drive spindle it should adhere to the magnetized cable.
Same thing can be accomplished with small steel shaft of some sort slightly smaller in diameter than the broken cable that is long enough to enter the speedo sleeve and still have a convenient length exposed. We're thinking the long leg of a small hex wrench, or heavy steel wire.

If the end of the broken off bit is not perfectly smooth, you might be able to grab one of the "threads" with a high quality tweezer and carefully pull it out.

If you go the magnet route, some spray lubricant may help, though it would make the tweezer plan useless, since the broken off bit would be too slippery to grab.

It looks to me like there is nothing broken on the end of the cable. I wonder if the nut just vibrated loose and the cable fell out. Have you tried to put the cable back in place and tightened the nut?

Hi Hardrock miner, just tried that and still does not work, I can hear the cable spinning inside the speedo but no registration of speed, will wait for new cable and try again.

Many thanks all for the usefull input, I am going to try the magnet thing as well, just in case.

If the speedometer worked before, and If the squared end of the cable did not break off, and if it seats properly in he speedometer, the the cable is not the problem.

Agreed.
The pic of the drive cable is just blurred enough that we can't tell if the squared end is still there.

I thought it was worth a shot. When you get the new cable....measure the square end on it and on the old one. That will tell you how much (if any) is stuck inside.
